Friday Morning Show Update

Ms. Melanie and Scott Boggie" Mr. Salsa" who played the role of JJ had a fully loaded show. Today we had a special guest at the Flow studio. Santa Claus called in and answered some questions and present requests. And don't worry, we have a lot of give a ways next week just in case you didn't get what you wanted for Christmas. We'll be back on Monday....Well everybody will be here except JJ and Ruby.......

Hype,

Ren Nay Nay

P.S. Have a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!!!!!!

Whatever!

The pressure is on! You currently have 5-days to make magic happen for your family. You're about to burst at the seams from stress and aggravation. You still don't have Uncle Wally's argyle socks wrapped and little Jimmy continues to add more toys he'll never play with, to his holiday wish-list.

And that's just the Christmas presents! We haven't even talked about the decorating, cooking, cleaning and entertaining. It's a magical time of the year, so long as you don't run the household.

But does it have to be that way? For years I watched my mum slave away for weeks leading up to Christmas, both in the mall and then in the kitchen. Now that I'm older, I see the other side of the situation, and if you're the one everyone depends on to make the holidays perfect, that's not a nice position to be in.

So I was totally blown away the other day while watching a holiday cooking show. At the end, the host wished everyone a happy holiday, but also made a clear point of stressing how it's not about making everything perfect.

That was probably the most refreshing thing I've seen on TV in years and the sad thing is, it takes some dude on TV to tell you to relax, for the point to sink in.

Yes, the holidays are about amazing sights, sounds, food and drink, but even a new poll echoes Ricardo's sage advice, with almost all Canadians agreeing, the most important part of the holidays is quality time with loved ones.

So this is your chance to break free from the crushing stress and enjoy the holidays! If you're cooking and scorch the turkey, overcook the carrots or make lumpy gravy, who cares! If its really that bad, there's always pizza!

If little Jimmy doesn't like what Santa left him, too bad, he'll get over it, too!

And if you're not celebrating the holidays, enjoy the time off! If you're one of the many people out there working over the holidays, I hope your shifts go by quick and people leave you lots of tips.

Either way, I sincerely wish all of you and your families a very Merry Christmas and all the best in the New Year, which is the next time you'll hear from me!

But Whatever!

Thursday Morning Show Update

Today was JJ's " King of Town" last day before he sets out for his vacation.... Where is he going, nobody knows.... Ms.Melanie won't admit it but she's going to miss JJ. Tomorrow we'll have a special guest calling in....Guess who??..... Here's a hint," he's making a list and checking it twice." Listen to tomorrow's show for your chance to win a Last Minute Shopping Prize,"The Kingdom" DVD, tickets to go to Kardinal Offishall's 10th Annual Christmas Event and you might be that lucky Grand Prize Winner of a $500 Future Shop shopping spree!!!!!!

Hype,

Ren Nay Nay

P.S. Of course I'll miss JJ

Whatever!

Over the last few years, I've had some difficulty accepting my age. Not that I look or feel old or anything, it's just that the numbers are getting higher and it's kinda freaking me out.

But the one good thing about being older is I get fewer presents at Christmas. Let me make it very clear, I'm NOT saying I don't want lots of presents, but as you age, the holiday haul tends to take a plunge.

If you're in the same boat, we should consider ourselves lucky for that because I can't help but notice that packaging these days has become a skill-testing activity or borderline extreme sport!

I'm so thankful I have all my digits and don't have arthritis, because some of the bubble-dome, crazy twist-tie and wire-strapped products out there are damn near impossible to free from their manufacturing bondage.

It's takes great skill, patience, a big knife, a saw, scissors, a crowbar, a hammer, and a whole lot of time to open packaging these days without being maimed!

And whoever came up with this stuff anyway?

The person that thought of a 5mm-thick piece of molded plastic, cocooning the prized product inside like a relic in a museum, should be fired!

Sure, it looks nice, but thousands of sliced-open hands and fingers later should prove that its not exactly a user-friendly way of packaging.

I'm sure it saves businesses lots of room on the truck, so they can haul more for a lot less. But if I break another light bulb trying to get it out of its plastic prison, I'm going to scream!

What the hell is wrong with the good, old fashioned cardboard box anyway? Not only is it more environmentally friendly to make, it won't take-off your fingers as you pry it open. It requires virtually no skill to get inside and more times than not, turns out to be an awesome new plaything for your pets or kids!

So here's one example where I think we can look back to the olden days with envy and think why can't things be like they used to?

But Whatever!

Wednesday Morning Show Update

Well Britney Spears is going to be an aunt!!! Her baby sister Jamie Lynn is pregnant!!! Who saw this coming?? This morning JJ" King of Town" gave Ms. Melanie an early Christmas Gift....The 12 Days Til Christmas, JJ style. This week we have a special guest coming in..... Guess who it is... Here's a hint," he's making a list and checking it twice." Listen to tomorrow's show for your chance to win a Last Minute Shopping Prize, a Future Shop Gift Card,"The Kingdom" DVD and tickets to go to Kardinal Offishall's 10th Annual Christmas Event ........

Don't miss out!!!!!!

Hype,

Ren Nay Nay

Whatever!

I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to the holidays! Besides hanging out with friends and family I haven't seen in a while, the eating of fabulous food and the drinking of merry-making beverages, there's another thing to get excited about!

It's called Pajama Day! I don't know if any of you ever do this, but sometimes, you just roll out of bed whenever, and don't bother to get dressed for the entire day! You eat cookies for breakfast and pancakes for dinner and you just don't care!

One of the best parts of this day of total freedom, is loafing on the couch and watching TV. But I gotta tell you, the people running the hundreds of stations out there are really dropping the ball!

I have like 900 channels, most of which are repeats, and it seems like there's never anything on!

Over the years, we've seen a lot of new specialty channels launched and some of them are quite good. However, there are others that are just plain infuriating! And there are 2-in particular that I cannot tolerate under any circumstances.

One rhymes with Heeva, the other sounds like Haction and there have been numerous times both of these specialty channels have been playing movies that I wanted to watch, but just couldn't sit through because of a commercial break every 7-minutes.

If you've ever watched either of these channels, you know what I'm talking about! What's worse, is they just randomly break for their annoying ads! Someone will be in an intense round of dialogue, or running from a rabid dog and bang! Into a word from our sponsors!

What's even funnier about these channels is, you used to have to pay like 3-bucks a month for them and now, they're included in your cable package. Even so, they've lost me as a viewer for good, because they don't put my needs first, and that's a big no-no anytime, especially on Pajama Day!

And before I go, a big thanks goes out to the nice guy on the bus this morning who was handing out free chocolates to everyone getting on! I must say, even though I have a serious tummy ache right now, Ferrero Rocher's are the breakfast of champions!

But Whatever!!!

Libra (Sept 23 - Oct 23): Cosmetic aids or dinnerware are a safe bet here, Librans will also enjoy receiving books and magazines this Christmas.

Today's topic is all about the joys of massive snowfall!

You're probably thinking I'm totally crazy at this point, but I'm telling you, there's an up-side to everything!

Yes, 26cm of snow, especially in a city like Toronto, can really bring out the beast in some people. Having to climb 4-foot snow-banks to get to your car or the bus stop first thing in the morning can be a drag.

Having to shovel all that snow, then re-shovel when the ploughs come and knock it back onto your walk can be quite defeating. And then there’s the sad fact that within hours, the pretty white accumulation turns a dingy grey from all the traffic exhaust.

But again, you gotta laugh at the situation. It's not often us city-folk get rattled, so it's always interesting to see how urbanites react to the kind of weather rural people get on a regular basis.

Honestly, it's kinda serious because drivers and pedestrians alike have to become much more aware of their surroundings, or something tragic can happen.

However, it's kinda fun too! Jumping snow-banks isn't an act I care to partake in every day, but it was fun coming to work yesterday morning. My bus was running on time, but was almost completely empty as it glided down the snow-lined road.

You know the kids are having a ball in this stuff and there's no reason why adults shouldn't jump into the thick, white, blanket of snow to goof around and be young again!

And it's times like these that we become more connected, and goodwill reigns supreme as we help each other dig out from the snow, or push stalled cars down the road.

Besides, if I wasn't house-bound due to the snowstorm this weekend, I never would've learned that buying pate is the way to go. Because making it yourself, is just plain nasty!

Whatever!

I was flipping through one of the papers yesterday and had to burst out laughing at the absolute, never-ending stupidity some people are capable of.

I suppose it's not nice to call someone stupid, but I can't think of a more appropriate word to describe the latest invention someone created for the more-than-pampered pooch out there.

Over the years, we've seen an alarming boom in the pet 'fashion' industry and here's hoping it's reached its plateau with the creation of the 'Puppoose'.

This thing, or sling, is like a purse for your dog, as in, you put your dog in this purse that has openings where their legs fit through and hang outside of the bag. It's pretty much like a baby carrier, except for your really hairy, 4-legged baby, which I thought were meant to walk, but anyway.

To say it looks ridiculous is the understatement of the century, but so are studded leather jackets on a Yorkshire Terrier or a pink dress on your miniature Poodle.

This whole idea of spoiling your pet with jewelry, marrying your pet off to another dog, dressing it up in costumes everyday and buying it a designer bag is, sorry to say, bizarre and slightly crazy!

If you're treating a living, functioning, breathing and thinking being on this planet as a toy, you've missed the mark on how to properly care for a pet.

They bring great joy to people of all ages and are wonderful companions and additions to the family. Growing up, we had tons of animals in our house, from birds and fish, to cats, dogs, gerbils and bunnies. I totally get it!

But what I will never understand is people who lose all touch with reality and humiliate their pets, to feed some kind of strange desire to treat their animal like an accessory.

If it's cold and you want to put a sweater on your dog, that makes sense, but giving it highlights and painting its nails is just plain wrong!

So if that's your idea pampering your pooch, maybe you should ask Santa to bring you a Barbie for Christmas, because at least that's what she was engineered for.

But Whatever!

Whatever!

I was out having dinner with a friend the other night when we couldn't help but hear some of the grossest sounds imaginable coming from the table beside us and it wasn't over a joy of the food.

To set the scene better for you, we were at a restaurant that has little canopies over some of the tables for a more intimate dining experience and that's exactly what this couple was having.

Being someone whose pet peeves include mouth noises, having to hear two lovebirds smacking lips while my friend and I are trying to have dinner was just plain nasty!

I understand a peck here or there, or maybe even a quick round of full-on tongue action. But these guys were non-stop throughout our entire meal!

They had their curtain closed, but there was no doubting what they were up to behind it and you'd think the sounds of us laughing at them, or even the waiter butting-in the curtain to ask them if they needed anything, would serve as a polite reminder to remember where the hell they were!

I'm okay with public displays of affection, but there's definitely a line of good taste that was continuously crossed that night. And I don't care how in love or lust these people were, there's a time and a place for everything and it's called a hotel room!

To put it bluntly, the way these guys were making out sounded like a stack of soaking wet towels hitting a tiled floor. So needless to say, it was just totally gross!

Honestly, these guys were going so strong, I didn't know if we should've paid them for the show, or they should've picked-up our tab for subjecting us to their display of inappropriate passion.

Either way, it was just plain wrong! Though our waiter says he's seen worse go on behind the curtain, so maybe we should consider ourselves lucky!

But Whatever!

You can hear Ruby Jones' Whatever rants live Tuesday-Friday during the Morning Show at 7:50, on Flow 93.5. Or check out the podcast at www.flow935.com!

Whatever!

Okay, so I got an update for you guys on yesterday's little rant!

To bring you up to speed, I was talking about buying a crappy hair-care product that did nothing for my hair, let alone meet the claims the company made about their product.

So, I sent them an email detailing my experience with their goods and how it left me wanting so much more. And apparently I wasn't the only person to write in!

The offending company in question got back to be the very next day and was very apologetic and even explained where the product may have gone wrong. According to these guys, the last version was so ineffective, they've re-formulated the stuff and I just happened to be unlucky enough to get some of the old stock.

They again apologized and offered to send me a coupon for the same product or to try another one in their line. Since they're trying to correct previous errors, I figure I'll give them another shot.

But the point of this is, sometimes it really pays to complain. I don't mean getting a replacement product. That's just a given.

The customer service person said because of letters like mine, the company was given a heads-up that maybe they needed to go back to the drawing board with their product. And if unsatisfied customers didn't let them know, they'd never be able to fix the problem.

So maybe this is proof that all us consumers are just as responsible for bad products on the market. While we don't make them or outrageous claims about their capabilities, we do continue to buy them and worse, suffer in silence and not let manufacturers know they need to do a better job.

I don't know about you, but I don't have money to burn, so it's up to us to make sure when a suspect good or service hits the market, we let its producers know, so they have a chance to improve it.

And if they don't, then it's time for some kind of regulating body to open up a can of whoop-ass and teach them a lesson!

P.S Watch out for the winter storm headeding our way. Please drive carefully!!!

Whatever!

About 99 per cent of the time, being a woman is awesome! But that one per cent can sometimes ruin everything for you.

For years, women have been the target of advertisers and marketers because in most households, we do the buying on everyday items.

Through this constant attack on our senses to buy, buy, buy, we're always coaxed into purchasing a wide range of beauty products.

This includes everything from soap and shaving cream to make-up and hair dye. And today's little story is about how I got royally ripped-off at the cash register!

My fabulous hair dresser, Bernie, recently stopped selling a truly wonderful colour shampoo that helped keep my fiery locks nice and red. Left to my own devices, I decided to try a new product to keep my mane looking fresh.

So, I tried it over the weekend and all I'm going to say is, it was completely useless! Not only did it leave zero colour in my hair, it left it looking and feeling greasy!

This is just another example of how women continue to fall victim to false advertising. I know men get the short end of the stick too, but you guys aren't relentlessly targeted in all the commercials like we are.

I guess my main concern about this whole thing is where's the standard? Why isn't their a governing body making these companies accountable for their outlandish claims and inferior products?

Think about it. Over your lifetime, how many things have you paid for that didn't come close to matching their promises or were just totally useless?

Why is this allowed to continue?

These are the questions I'm trying to uncover and I've even sent off a complaint to the offending hair-care company, so I'll keep you posted on how that goes. Though at this point, I'm just really hoping a government power will finally step-up and demand accountability for all us consumers.

But Whatever!

Whatever!

There's always a great debate every year about when you should put up your Christmas tree. Is the first week of December too early? Is the last week of December too late?

I guess it all depends on family tradition or making your own when you move out and start your own family.

So like probably many of you out there, I'm putting my tree up this weekend, with a bit of apprehension.

Being 'Mistress Christmas', you'd think I'd be all over the idea of getting my place decorated, but this year, I kinda lacking the spirit.

It's so bad right now, I think I'm going to have to ingest spirits to really get into the whole ordeal, because when you break it down, it is a big task!

Pulling out all those boxes, unwrapping all those glass balls, bells, lights, candy canes and wreaths and then positioning them oh-so-perfectly on the tree can be a little daunting, if not time consuming and slightly irritating after a while.

The other thing that bothers me about this whole decorating of the tree business, is every year I buy new lights. Since I'm petrified they'll run-out midway through the holidays and I'll have to strip, then re-dress my tree, a fresh set of lights are a must.

But I'm sort of in the dumps because I can't find the ones I like. They have all these different flicker and glowing settings and they're so much fun! However, it seems they've been replaced by some other kind of creation meant to win us over at the cash register this year.

My mum thinks I'm not into Christmas yet because I'm getting older and realizing the holidays are indeed, a lot of hard work to pull-off. She's probably onto something there, but I figure it's nothing a little spiked eggnog, my Christmas Log DVD and some holiday tunes can't fix.

But if you hear tormented screams and a whole lot of cursing coming from the north end of the city this weekend, don't worry, it's only me putting up my tree!

But Whatever!

Here are their Top 10 sexiest TV women:
#1.) PAMELA ANDERSON . . . (C.J. Parker on "Baywatch")
#2.) FARRAH FAWCETT . . . (Jill Munroe on "Charlie's Angels")

#7.) BARBARA EDEN . . . ("I Dream of Jeannie")
#8.) KATHERINE HEIGL . . . (Dr. Izzie Stevens on "Grey's Anatomy")
#9.) CATHERINE BACH . . . (Daisy Duke on "The Dukes of Hazzard")
#10.) TINA LOUISE . . . (Ginger Grant on "Gilligan's Island")

Whatever!

When you turn on the TV or listen to music, sometimes it's hard to tell what's real.

Thanks to computers, there are so many ways of making people sound good, look good or bring mythological and sci-fi characters and situations to the screen and make them look like real-life.

While things like that can be totally mind-blowing and entertaining, something has got to be said for old fashioned, unquestionable, stand alone talent.

I saw that before my very eyes last week when I was lucky enough to catch a showing of Irving Berlin's White Christmas at the Sony Centre.

I've always been a fan of dance performances and listening to good singers, but this was as top-notch as you can get.

Not only were the sets and costumes beautiful and amazing to look at, the talent of everyone on that stage was stunning.

To see someone do an incredibly complicated tap routine in a way that makes it look like their floating across the stage, really is something to behold. So is someone gracefully belting out a tune with so much force and control, but making it look and sound effortless.

And the saddest part about this, is we don't get to see this stuff nearly enough. Toronto is a city of culture and there's always something going on, but a lot of us don't take advantage of it.

I'm pretty guilty of that, but when I do head out to see a show as truly wonderful as White Christmas is, it's a good reminder that the art and skill of live performance is still alive and well in our world, that seems to be overrun with lame movies, formulaic music videos, and over-the-top video games.

Sometimes getting back to the old fashioned basics is the most refreshing and enlightening thing you could ever expose yourself to.

So here's a challenge for you, instead of spending another 40-bucks for a night at the movie theatre, expand your horizons and open yourself up to real, live talent! It's definitely out there. All you got to do is be open to it!

But Whatever!

Whatever!

Being somebody in broadcast news, you'd think I'd know at least a little bit about a lot of things. Up until a couple of weeks ago, I thought I did.

But apparently there's a massive shortage of a holiday fruit that nobody told me about! Or maybe there's been wide-spread bladder infections, causing victims to guzzle all the cranberry juice in the land, thus sapping the berry supply.

Some of you may have been listening last week when I put out the call for information on fresh cranberries. And several of you were even kind enough to do some research and email me back on where I could find some.

Alas, I wasn't able to pick-up any over the weekend, but I did call my regular grocery store to see if they were getting a shipment anytime soon. The lovely produce man I spoke with said they'd be getting a delivery on Sunday.

Because of the weather, I figured I'd give them a day, so I went in on Monday to see if they were stocked-up yet. When I walked in, I vigorously scanned the rows of produce but sadly, couldn’t find any of the familiar bags holding dozens of the tart, red, globes of holiday goodness.

Desperate, I went up to a couple of gentlemen loading displays with fruits and veggies to see if they knew where the cranberries where at.

One of them was a manager of some kind and said they were in the building, they just didn't know where. Then both men started digging through dozens of boxes to find some, and that's when another woman rolled-up with her cart asking if they knew where the cranberries where?

To make a long story less long, they couldn't find them!

So I'm, still stuck without cranberries! I can get frozen, I can get dried, but the fresh ones seem to be on the endangered species list and here I am, rapidly approaching Christmas with no lemon cranberry pound cake in sight. It's a sad state of affairs indeed.

Whatever !

It's a nice time to be a pedestrian in Toronto, or maybe not!

Unless you've already burrowed underground to start hibernating, you no doubt noticed the healthy dash of snow we got over the weekend. I was out for a night on the town with fellow Flow goddesses Sam Mitchell and midday lady Jeni, when the flakes started flying!

No doubt about it, the scene was a gorgeous sight to behold! That was until I stepped out of the house yesterday morning, when it was anything but!

As if coming to work, dark and very early on a Monday morning isn't bad enough, it was painful to watch people clumsily jump sloppy, slushy snowdrifts to get on board the bus because the city didn't do its job.

We were warned last week about how the snow ploughs wouldn't be out like they used to, in order to save cash-starved Toronto a few million dollars. Just keep in mind, you’ll be fined over $100 if you don’t shovel within 12-hours of snowfall.

So how can our Mayor constantly extol the virtues of public transit, biking or walking as an environmentally healthy transportation alternative, when it's practically a death defying practice in this city after a snowstorm?

Sure, it's tough getting around when it's snowy and stuff, but what happened yesterday was unacceptable! Standing at a bus stop 24-hours after heavy snowfall and having to jump 5-feet over the snow and slush to get onto the bus is flat-out ridiculous for a place like Toronto.

Perhaps it's about that time for another generous credit card company to fork-over a wad of cash so the city can run properly and people don't have to fear for their safety. Because here in Toronto, using the sidewalks means you've got a 50/50 shot of a clean getaway, or a broken hip.

Instead of using taxpayers’ money on fancy dinners, art and limo rides, maybe the city should take that cash and invest in public shovels at every intersection.

I don't know about you, but I have no problem cleaning-up the sidewalk while waiting for the bus. At least I'll keep warm and do something for my fellow Torontonians, a basic level of courtesy I thought our elected officials were paid to provide us with.

But Whatever!
