As far as professional athletes go, Mats Sundin's a pretty classy guy.

You never hear about him getting drunk after another horrible Leafs loss and picking fights in bars with mocking fans.

You never hear about him complaining about how much his team stinks and how he's not paid enough money to endure the torture.

You never hear him whining about being the captain of a chronically losing team that's managed by a string of chronically dysfunctional characters.

So, is it any surprise our dear Mats isn't cutting and running, like many superstars have done before, when given the option to head to a contender?

Not really.

While the Leafs have been less than stellar for many years now, it's not Sundin's fault. He knows it and that's why he won't be part of any trade on today's deadline.

He's refused to waive his no-trade clause and is sticking-it-out with the club through another painfully brutal season, even though he knows he's pissing some fans off by doing that.

If you're one of those angry BeLeafers, lemme tell you something, it's not like the Buds are in a strong bargaining position here. You think any of the 29-other clubs out there haven't been licking their chops and thinking of all the many ways they can fleece Cliff Fletcher in a Mats-Sundin deal?

We're dead in the water. Everyone knows it. We have no leverage and wouldn't get much in return for Sundin, so what's the use in slagging a guy who is actually making a sacrifice for his career, by staying and finishing out the season?

Honestly ask yourself, how many players out there do you know that want to retire with their chosen team and would give-up a chance at the Stanley Cup to stay with that crappy club, out of sheer loyalty?

I thought so.

Whatever!

With another winter weekend on tap, I plan to spend the majority of my time over the next few days in the warm and comfy confines of my apartment.

You see, I'm quite excited to get started on a new book I picked-up the other day, and I want to make a big dent in it, or maybe even finish it before the weekend is out.

I tried doing this very thing with a book my Mum lent me a few weeks ago. It's a massive, hardcover story that's got to be about 15-hundred pages by the look of it.

My Mum told me a bit about the story set in India about different families and their never-ending quest to find the perfect spouse for their kids to marry and reproduce with. And I was very eager to start tackling the mountain of pages, until I opened it up to start reading and realized this was going to be a marathon for my eyes.

Not because there were so many words to conquer, but because they were so crammed together!

Page after page, after page, all I could see was a sea of black with only white around the edges. I'm not kidding you when I say this writer and their editor clearly never read this book in its printed version, because the font was so damn small and there were no spaced paragraphs to break it up!

The fact the reader has to lug this 10-pound book around is bad enough, the least they can do is make it legible! That is common sense, isn't it?

I get that it's expensive to print books. The cost of ink and paper for a 15-hundred page novel has got to be atrocious, but let's get real here, if I can't read your book in the first place, what's the point of publishing it?!

Honestly, with what seems like fewer and fewer people bothering to read books in the first place, a move like this is bad business for the publishing industry and I'll warn them now, if I ever find the courage to crack this book open again, you better believe I'm sending you the bill for my new eye-glasses!

One thing I really like about living in a city the size of Toronto is there's always something going on and there's always a store or restaurant that's open.

You might've heard city politicians talking about allowing all stores across Toronto to stay open 364-days a year. The one exception is Christmas Day.

Currently, shops in designated tourist areas can stay open on stat holidays without getting fined. But it looks like we're a half-step closer to becoming a city that never sleeps, or celebrates.

Yesterday, Toronto's economic development committee okayed a plan to let downtown and east-end stores stay open on holidays, without penalties. But said 'no' to a city-wide option allowing all stores to open-up for business on stats.

Some merchants actually want to be open year-round, so they can cut into the

economic advantage downtown stores have been enjoying for years.

The city argues if all retailers were open, it would allow tourists and residents to spend their leisure time shopping. But what about the people made to work?

When I say made to work, in a lot of cases, some employees don't have a choice.

When I worked at Blockbuster years ago, everyone on staff either worked Christmas or New Years. There was no way out of it. You had to take one of those shifts, regardless of your family or religious commitments.

That same thing happens in shops across the city, and giving greedy business owners the legal right to make employees work on the very days they're supposed to spend time with their families and relax, is just plain wrong.

We've got 350-some odd days of the year to shop! I understand your neighbourhood pharmacy staying open in case of emergencies, which they already do, but I don't know many people who need to buy a pair of shoes on Good Friday!

Granted, this is a multi-cultural city and some of the stat holidays are based on certain religious beliefs, but considering how few free-days we get to begin with, the least the city can do is lay-off and let us all have a break.

Wednesday Morning Show Update

This morning Daniel , The TV Addict, stopped by the Flow Studios and JJ"King of Town" and Daniel went into an in-depth conversation about..... you guessed it Knight Rider. Ms.Melanie just sat in silence until Daniel started to talk about American Idol...... We qualified another lucky listener for that trip for 2 to GOA, India!!!!! Listen tomorrow morning for your chance to qualify!!!

Hype,

Ren Nay Nay

Whatever!

And the plot thickens! Here's proof there's no such thing as a happy ending, because someone is always going to try to rain on your parade.

You've no doubt heard about Huckleberry, that gorgeous chocolate-brown Lab stolen from outside a Rosedale bakery over the weekend.

What really caught people's attention was when the dog's heartbroken owner offered a no-questions-asked 15-thousand dollar reward for the return of his canine friend.

It was a thing of beauty for visual media outlets when they were invited to a neighbourhood park to see the frisky pet prance around in the snow after he was returned safe and sound, albeit under odd circumstances.

It should come as no surprise, police have apparently arrested the two people who made the late-night drop-off of the beloved pooch on Sunday.

It's also worth noting, the dog's owner is reportedly the son of a bank president, as if we didn't already know money isn't an issue for this guy.

If you've read the Letters to the Editor pages in local newspapers, you'll see a wide range of opinions, some of them angrily denouncing the fact 15-grand was paid for the return of a dog. A dog!!!

Sure, they're man's best friend and a part of the family, but who pays the equivalent of a post-secondary education for a Labrador retriever? Someone with money.

If you had that kind of cash and loved your dog, you'd totally pay that kind of reward to get it back. For crying out loud, if you won the lottery today, no one would blink if you bought matching Porsches and the same pair of $12-hundred stilettos in 20-different colours.

It's what people with money do. That's why they're eccentric and the rest of us poor folks are just plain crazy.

We can't understand how the other side lives, and you'd be lying through your teeth if you said you weren't dying to try. So be happy this guy got his dog back and just get on with it, because like the Comments Section suggests, there are more important things to worry about in life.

I'm a firm believer that some things are meant to be, like going shopping and finding a bunch of amazing outfits that fit you perfectly and all just happen to be on sale.

Or looking at your living-room thinking it's time to get some new furniture, but you just don't have the cash. Then there's a big sale at a groovy home-decorating place down the street.

And like my birthday celebrations! The parentals and family friends gathered on Sunday for pre-birthday partying that was supposed to start at a restaurant.

My Mom scoped-out a place that had good food and a pool table a few weeks ago. She called them last week to confirm the details on Sunday's festivities, and found out the eatery had since gone out of business!

Our second restaurant choice seemed like it's on the verge of going-under. We were somewhat welcomed by a lazy, un-engaging waitress talking on her cellphone, her screaming 2-year old and a broken coffee machine. And when she finally came to take our order an hour later, she informed us there was no guacamole and there were no plans to make any. Keep in mind, this was a Mexican restaurant.

Right on cue, we finished our Corona and searched the Junction in the pouring rain to try our luck on a third place to eat and open presents. Several blocks later, we ended up at a Thai place that proved three-times is indeed, a charm!

We had great food and a fabulous waiter, Victor, who took good care of us. After that, we headed-off for some pool, in which I got totally smoked, but it was good times anyway.

So, the moral of this story is, keep your cool and all the chips will fall into place. I gotta thank Mom, Rick-Daddy, Jim, Sue, Mike & Gina for having a good sense of humour and sticking-it out in bad weather to make the celebration so much fun!

And also a big thanks to everyone on Facebook who bombarded My Wall yesterday to wish me a happy birthday too. I’m so humbled!

There's nothing like wasting a bunch of taxpayer’s dollars to create a big spectacle over a couple of lying liars.

All I got to say is thank God that over-the-top showdown between Roger Clemens and Brian McNamee this week in Washington, wasn't on my dime!

Instead of solving the homeless situation, housing-market crisis or creating laws to keep pedophiles off the street, Congressmen are blowing valuable time and money on figuring out if the former Jays ace took a shot of HGH in the rump, care of his former trainer.

If you watched any of the testimony, you'll know both guys were fudging the truth, especially Clemens.

Lots of opinion polls are out saying most of us don't believe Rocket Roger's story and if you talk to people, most of them don't really care.

Sure, it's a letdown and a bad message for our youth. But if a sports star is a child's one and only hero in life, that kid's got more pressing problems to deal with and politicians should be spending their energy on creating outreach programs and free, mandatory parenting classes for everyone in America, before opening a nasty can of worms that will never be cleaned-up.

Honestly, you gotta wonder where people's priorities are! The sad fact of life is, professional athletes dope-up. There's a fewer percentage that don't compared to those that do. These guys and to a lesser extent girls, will do anything to get that edge.

That line of work requires an intense amount of determination. To play through pain, to push you mind and body to the limits. They live hard and they play hard and some will gamble with their health to reach the top.

Those are the stakes. So maybe it's about that time we started educated kids on the reality, temptations and struggles of pro-sports instead of focusing on the fame and big money.

It's on this day every year that one gets a bevy of reactions. Some people love Valentine's Day, others loathe it, and the rest barely notice it and generally just don't care.

I share my thoughts with you on this topic every year about how this is really just some marketing ploy meant to get more money out of your hands and into cash registers across the land.

It's really more about a passion for material items today than it is a yearning, burning, throbbing and aching for your sweetheart.

But you can also take a less jaded view on it, if you choose.

There's the constant argument that couples should be nice to each other regardless of what day it is. But let's be honest, with jobs, school, kids, bills and all that crap, sometimes there's no room for daily romance, so today's an excuse to go all out!

However, if you're flying solo and none too happy about it, today can really stink. Alas, you can always hold onto the fact you're not alone on that rickety Boat of the Un-Attached.

And don't forget, not everyone who is in a relationship right now is all that happy. Between you and me, things are less than stellar in Jones' household and today's a day I'd rather soon sleep through.

But you gotta remember, no matter what your romantic situation is or isn't right now, there are people in your life that love, appreciate and respect you.

So, instead of getting down when you see people smelling roses and munching on chocolates, remember that today and above all else, love yourself...And that can be done in more ways than one! :P

P.S. Melanie has a surprise for the best button pusher in Toronto......Can you guess what it is?????

Whatever!

You know, I'd just like to take this opportunity to clear-up some common misconceptions.

For whatever reason, I'm an organized person. My mum says I've been that way since birth. When I was a kid, she never had to nag me to do my homework, or bribe me into cleaning my room. I just got it done without the need of any guidance from the parentals.

So, fast forward a couple of decades and here I am, Little Miss Self-Sufficient. Able to get things done without batting an eyelash, because that seems to be my X-Men mutant gift.

But it ain't easy to be organized in a world where others aren't. I mean, you have to wait for everyone else!

I get up in the morning and have to wait 15-minutes before I can get all the sports headlines off The Score.

I have to wait for what seems like an eternity for my slow-ass, decrepit elevator to reach my floor and take me back down to earth.

Then I have to head out to the bus stop and wait several minutes there for my morning ride to take me into work.

When I get to work, I write my casts and get everything ready, but then I have to wait for the top and bottom of the hour to do the news!

That's my daily routine. And now, because I'm so organized and ahead of the game, I did my taxes last week, hoping to get my returns in early. I have all the necessary paperwork, with the exception of a student loan statement. So here I am, waiting up to another 2-weeks for that!

So if you find yourself running behind this morning or in general, don't feel too bad about it. Afterall, it could be much, much worse. You could be the person waiting for you to show up!

But Whatever!

Human-kind is so darn interesting! There's something that seems to run through all of us. Like we’re all connected with a general train of thought.

Like why we always need answers. Why we always need to lay blame, and to a lesser extent, why some men just can't remember putting the toilet seat down!

A couple of those facts of life have come blatantly into play over the last 48-hours or so, since Richard Zednik's throat was slashed open during a hockey game between the Panthers and Sabers in Buffalo.

If you haven't seen the footage, it's pretty gruesome, and amazing that this guy was able to skate off the ice and survive this injury. Which by the way, was an accident.

Yet leave it to some people to turn it into a fear-mongering experience. Sure, it was absolutely horrible what happened to Zednik. Apparently a couple of people in the stands had heart attacks and several others regurged their hotdogs and beer as the scene unfolded.

Countless people watching at home turned away in empathetic disgust while watching the replays, and felt a sincere concern for this guy's life, regardless of their level of interest in the NHL.

That being said, can we please calm down about the safety of the game? Considering how many millions of hockey matches are played around the world, the chances of this happening are quite slim.

I'm sure this has rocked a few players and if they want to wear protective gear around their neck, that's their business. But making something like this mandatory isn't going to change anything.

This was an accident. Everything happens for a reason. This isn’t the time for an entrepreneur to strike it rich on someone else's misery by creating a product that will be deemed unnecessary within weeks.

Honestly, if anyone's that concerned with the safety of the game, change the mentality of players, not their protective gear. When you play with respect, the chances of getting hurt are that much less. And anyone who’s that afraid of getting hurt, shouldn’t be playing at all.

Whatever!

'm probably going to make a few people angry this morning, but too bad!

Being an information-junky, I watch and listen to a lot of talk TV and radio and I gotta say, I'm really getting tired of people who don't live in Toronto, who have the nerve to bitch and complain about the quality of life here.

Be it day or night-time call-in shows, there are people phoning-in from way outside the GTA to tell everybody watching at home how much the city stinks.

Any time there's a shooting, that's the topic of the day, and someone from Peterborough or Barrie will call-in and say how afraid they are to come into Toronto and how unsafe and scary the city has become.

Please! You don't even live here! You don't even know what its like to walk on our streets in the day or evening, so stop acting like you have even a minute clue as to what's going on here!

I don't know what it's like in Trenton, so you better believe I don't call-up their local shows and complain about their crime stats or municipal politicians and the circus act they put on all the time.

This is much like the case when it comes to family members. Let's be honest here, you know you've got someone in your clan who's just not right. Who sticks out like a sore thumb and was probably adopted, or something.

Well, it’s okay for you to make fun of them all you want, but someone on the outside of the family who tries to join-in on your reindeer games better watch their mouth, or else!

So unless you live in Toronto or very close to it, don't smack talk my city! It's got its problems and needs a lot of work in some places, but it's mine and I love it, freaks, flaws and all.

If you thought the education system was bad when you were in school, get a load of this!

Apparently, the province is encouraging teachers to take it easier on high school students. Life is hard for them. I mean, with all the video games they have to play, dates they have to go on and perfect clothes they have to pick-out, who has time to do homework?

There's a new document floating through school boards across the province urging teachers not to dock marks on papers and assignments that are handed in late, and instead grade the quality of the work, not it's timeliness.

And all I got to say to that is are you #$^*@_#&)!* kidding me?

I know there are a lot of teens out there working part-time jobs while they go to school, and I totally understand how stressful it can be to juggle work and school at the same time. Sometimes, you can't help handing stuff in late.

But there are also a lot of kids who do nothing except socialize and loaf around instead of getting their homework done. And it's these kids who are going to suffer the worst from what I think is one of the most insane and irresponsible moves ever made in the education system.

The premise behind it is to make kids who are struggling not feel so defeated when they get an F for not handing in their paper.

Sorry pal, but that's life! Not everything in it is going to make you feel good about yourself and it's challenges like deadlines that make us better and more productive people.

If you can't meet society's minimal standards, then it’s everyone's job to help you along, but that doesn't include getting a free ride.

School is one of the major paths everyone travels on their road through life. Give somebody a good education and in most cases, they'll turn out to be confident people who make positive contributions to our community.

Tell them they can do a half-assed job, get away with it and still graduate? You're not only hurting them, you're hurting the rest of us as well.

But Whatever!

Wednesday Morning Show Interview

Will this winter ever end?????? This morning JJ"King of Town" felt under the weather so Scott Boogie aka Mr. Salsa held down the button pushing duties. What's the most romantic movie of all time????? We voted The Notebook.....This morning we qualified another lucky listener for a trip for 2 to EILAT, ISRAEL!!!!!!! Listen tomorrow for your shot to qualify.....

Hype,

Whatever!

I don't know about you, but I've had it with winter! Yes, I'm sure that sounds a bit surprising, but in all seriousness, I'm quite depressed right now!

News yesterday of the winter storm watch hit me like an unanticipated snowball in the face and I gotta tell you, Mother Nature is hurting me right now.

I was so looking forward to the temporary thaw of the last few days. You know, mild enough to get away with wearing your fall coat, instead of your big, bulky winter one. And not having to slip and slide through snow that still hasn't been shoveled was something I was really starting to enjoy.

But now it's back and I'm none too happy about it! Sure it looks pretty, but by tomorrow, we're all going to be sick of it!

However, there is some light at the end of the tunnel. While it's not a fabulous-sounding weather forecast, it has to do with City Hall holding a meeting on snow-related issues.

Toronto's Works Committee will go over a list of complaints and recommendations on Friday, that come straight from pedestrians themselves, who are sick and tired of being thought of last in a snowstorm.

Some of the suggestions include actually plowing sidewalks that run along all the major roads in the city. Duh!

My favourite is setting a minimum-width property owners have to clear through the snow, since it's ridiculous to think hundreds of people walking down Yonge Street are all going to squeeze through a walkway the width of a dinky, plastic shovel, all at the same time.

I guess what really gets me down about this weather is how inconsiderate property owners are. If you don't like shoveling, you're hardly alone in that boat, but we live in Canada and we get snow, which means by law, you are required to clean-up in a timely manner after a storm.

So for the love of God, to the city, businesses and homeowners out there, please be nice and clear your ice! Oh yeah, and clean off your car too!

But Whatever!

P.S. Tomorrow was special guest is coming into the Flow studios.......KLICK.....makes a special appearance.

Whatever!

You know, it blows my mind how many people have no common sense or concept of proper manners. So, I'm dedicating today's Whatever, to public laundry facility etiquette, something that's sorely lacking in my apartment building.

I swear to God, I almost went postal Friday when there was a backlog of tenants using the washers and dryers. I guess because of the storm, a lot of people were home and wanted to get their laundry done.

Because I'm the kind of person who loathes dragging my dirty clothes down to the basement, I'll wait until I'm out of socks and underwear, and I have lots of those, so you can imagine how heavy my laundry sack can get.

Keeping that in mind, I had to drag this thing down 7-floors, not once, not even twice, but three times!!!

The first time, all the machines were in use, so I came back a couple of hours later. At that time, someone had the nerve to leave their clothes in the washing machine for over 20-minutes. A woman taking her clothes from the dryer told me to just take the guy's stuff out and put mine in.

Only problem is, I lived in an apartment once where someone did that to someone else’s clothes and that person went cuckoo and left nasty notes on everyone's doors.

I told her I'd just come back later. So I did, loaded my stuff and then came back down when it was time to use the dryers. Nothing was running, so I put coins in both of them, only to open one of them and Ass-Clown still had his damn laundry in there!

Lemme tell you how it took all my strength in this world not to take that ignorant loser's clothes out and throw them in the snow!

Instead, I slammed the door, threw all my clothes into one dryer, lost $1.50 on the one he was hogging, and almost put his gear through another drying cycle hoping his underwear would shrink to child-like proportions, but I took the high road and went back to my apartment.

But I got a message for the total swine who held up a whole-bunch of people with your ignorance: Not only do you stink, you need to get a timer so you can remove your clothes on-time and you also owe me a buck-fifty! And P.S. empty the lint screen next time too!!!

Medical marijuana vending machines take root in Los Angeles

What will they think of next?????

LOS ANGELES — The city that popularized the fast food drive-thru has a new innovation: 24-hour medical marijuana vending machines.

Patients suffering from chronic pain, loss of appetite and other ailments that marijuana is said to alleviate can get their pot with a dose of convenience at the Herbal Nutrition Center, where a large machine will dole out the drug around the clock.

Inventor and owner Vincent Mehdizadeh says the machines give users convenience, low prices, safety and anonymity.

But federal drug agents say the invention may need unplugging.

Police say the people who own and fill the machines could be breaking laws.

At least three dispensaries in the city have installed vending machines to distribute the drug to people who carry cards authorizing marijuana use.

The computerized machine requires fingerprint identification and a prepaid card with a magnetic stripe. Once the card and fingerprint are verified, a bright green envelope with the pot drops down a slot.

Mehdizadeh said it took seven months to develop and patent the black, armored box, which he calls the “PVM,” or prescription vending machine.

Mehdizadeh says any user approved for medical marijuana and registered in a computer database at his dispensaries can pre-purchase the drug and then use the machine to pick up.

The process provides convenience and privacy for users who may otherwise feel uncomfortable about buying marijuana, Mehdizadeh said.

At the Timothy Leary Medical Dispensary in the San Fernando Valley, the vending machine is accessible only during business hours. An employee there said the machine was introduced about five months ago, and provides speedy service.

“It helps a lot of patients who are in a lot of pain and don’t want to wait around to get help,” Robert Schwartz said. “It’s been working out great.”

Mehdizadeh said he sought the advice of doctors, and decided to limit the amount of marijuana per user to an ounce per week. Each purchase from the machine yields 1/8th or 2/8ths of an ounce. By eliminating a vendor behind the counter, he said, the machine offers users lower drug prices. The 1/8th ounce packet would cost about US$40 — US$20 lower than the average price at other dispensaries.

A spokesman for a marijuana advocacy group said the machine also benefits dispensary owners.

“It limits the number of workers in the store in the event of a raid, and it’ll make it harder for theft,” said Nathan Sands, of The Compassionate Coalition.

Marijuana use is illegal under federal law, which does not recognize the medical marijuana laws in California and 11 other states.

The Drug Enforcement Agency and other federal agencies have been actively shutting down major medical marijuana dispensaries throughout the state over the past two years and charging their operators with felony distribution charges.

Mehdizadeh said the Herbal Nutrition Center was the target of a federal raid in December. He said no arrests were made and no charges have been filed against him.

Kris Hermes, a spokesman for advocacy group Americans for Safe Access, said the machine might benefit those who already know how much and what strain of marijuana they’re looking for. But he said others will want to see and smell the drug before they buy it.

A man who said he has been authorized to use medical marijuana as part of his anger management therapy said the vending machine’s security measures would at least protect against illicit use of the drug.

“You have kids that want to get high and that’s not what marijuana is for,” Robert Miko said. “It’s to medicate.”

This is a kind of exciting time to get into politics. If you were never interested before, the things that are unfolding state-side might catch your eye for the simple fact history is being made.

I was watching a pre-election debate last night featuring candidates, neither of which was a rich, old white guy. Surprise, surprise! The only people now running for the democratic presidential nomination are an African-American man, and a woman!

That means whichever one of them wins the primaries, has a 50/50 shot at leading the world's most powerful country. You know there are a lot of red-necks and misogynists rolling in their graves at the thought of that.

So imagine how amazing it would be if Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton teamed-up as a President-Vice President duo, or vice versa?

That would be pretty cool indeed. But there is a drawback to this situation.

I don't know about those two candidates, but I wouldn't want anyone voting for me just because I'm a woman, or just because of my ethnicity.

It's a given, a lot of people will vote along gender or race lines and since both candidates have similar goals for getting the US back on track, it's going to be a tough choice for anyone voting Democratic in November.

But like all big decisions in life, they require much thought and examination. And when it comes to giving someone a job, it should always be based on their qualifications, personality and ability to inspire and lead their co-workers.

It shouldn't be about what kind of image or message they present to society.

While it is an uplifting thing to see America finally embracing progressive candidates like these, I only hope the right person for the job will be nominated and race or gender won't be the deciding or hindering factor.
