A $100-million ocean observatory on the sea floor off the B.C. coast will give Canadians and everyone else an unprecedented look at life beneath the surface of the ocean.
The Neptune Canada project launched yesterday is the world's largest and most advanced underwater ocean observatory.
The project will provide 24-hour internet access to deep-sea life in the Pacific Ocean.
Three ships and at least one underwater robot-operated vehicle will be used to lower five 13-tonne module-like structures containing hundreds of observation instruments to the sea floor, where they will be connected to 800 kilometres of fibre-optic cable. the project is helping Canada become a world leader in undersea research. Researchers around the world will be able to use the ocean observatory to conduct deep-sea experiments and receive real-time data without leaving their laboratories and offices.
